Panda Update | Farmer Update in Feb 2011

As of 24th Feb 2011, a major update by Google on how it ranks sites has affected 12% of search results and halved many sites’ visitor numbers. Named the Farmer or Panda Update it’s only affecting US Google results as I write but if you’re outside the US it is coming to you soon. Here’s how to find out if you have already been hit, are going to be and what to do about it.

Google update its algorithm in terms of:
  • Too many links taking you away from the main page.
  • Too many broken links.
  • Too many ads.
  • Lack of original content
  • Expired deals & vouchers
  • Most effective point is low quality content.

These points are caused to lose some websites ranking in SERPs.
According to search metrics report some losers are:

Pricedash.com (-99.7%)
Discountshoppinguk.co.uk (-99.3%)

Some top sites has gained the ranking:
Ebay.co.uk (+42.1%)
Techcrunch.com (+40.7%)

Event Tracking

What is Event Tracking?
Event Tracking is a feature of Google Analytics. You can use to track different actions of visitors who come to your website, such as clicking a button or downloading a file.

How to setup the event tracking code:
First you will obviously need to have Google Analytics installed on your website. If you already GA installed on your website you need to make sure you have the most current, up to date, script. Once your GA script is setup correct to allow tracking you are ready to setup the links you will be tracking. The syntax uses for tracking is, _trackEvent() method:

The following components are necessary for _trackEvent() method

_trackEvent(category, action, label)

*  category (required)
   The name you supply for the group of objects you want to track.

*  action (required)
   A string that is uniquely paired with each category, and commonly used to define the type of user interaction    for the   web object.

*  label (optional)
   An optional string to provide additional dimensions to the event data.

*  value (optional)
   An integer that you can use to provide numerical data about the user event.

Example: A simple example for event tracking illustrates how you might use the Tracking of a video link:

a href="#" onClick="_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Videos', 'Play', 'Baby\'s First Birthday']);"

Note: Please add the starting tab < in just beginning of this example. And close it by >

In this Example events would display Videos as category, Play as the action, and Baby's First Birthday as the Label.

How to Keep Away Your Page from Being Cached in Yahoo

The Yahoo! Search engine saves snapshots of most of the pages it discovers during the web crawling process. It links to the cached page so that we can view the snapshot in case the live page is unavailable at the time of your search. When you view a cached page, you’ll see it as it looked when Yahoo! Search last indexed it.

If you don’t want your content to be accessible through the cache link, you can change your webpage to use either of the following methods:

Apply the NOARCHIVE metatag

Place the following tag in the section of your page:

or

Apply the NOARCHIVE Directive

Configure your web server to place the following directive in the HTTP header:

X-Robots-Tag: NOARCHIVE

Our web crawler continues to index and follow links from the page, but it doesn't display a cached page link in search results. Please note this change will occur the next time the Yahoo! Search engine crawls the page containing the NOARCHIVE tag or directive. This typically takes place at least once per month.

Please note that NOARCHIVE only removes the cached page. To prevent the page content from being indexed, use the NOINDEX tag. To prevent the crawler from following links from a webpage, use the NOFOLLOW tag.
